36 Degrees widget V3

written by Stuart on February 5th, 2006

That's right, another update to the 36 Degrees widget for you to digest. This time it's really a feature improvement rather than a graphical redirection.

36 Degrees Widget Front

The front of the widget now contains a search function, which when used will bring you to the results page of the site in your chosen web browser. Given the nature of a widget, adding something like this is as simple as adding a search field to your website. In this case, given that widgets do not share the same cross platform concerns as a website, I have declared the field as type=search, meaning that I can have the nice rounded search box that you see in safari.

36 Degrees Widget Back

Whereas the previous version had no backside (someone said the same about me once), this version has a reverse which features the most recent 8 images uploaded to my flickr account. Again, this is so simple to do, I urge you to have a go.

Rip it up, play with it, experiment

Widget IconAs with the previous versions, please feel free to take this widget apart, make your own widget using the code. If you want to learn more about widgets, there is no better place to start than the Apple Developer Connection. From there you can download sample code for a selection of different types of widgets. If you do end up reusing my widget, please do let me know so I can have a peek at it.

Also, while were on the subjects of widgets, given my renewed enthusiasm for widget creation, I'm interested to hear any ideas you might have for great widgets, and windows users, sorry, but you're going to have to sit this one out. Also, if you want a widget of your very own, be it for your website, flickr stream, whatever, give me a shout and we'll see if we can work something out for you.

A variation of your V2 one. I added the backside, although all the code was already there, I just had to put the button on the front to flip it.

Hey Joint, I actually had a look at your widget a couple of days ago, saw a couple of links in my referrers. You did a good job!

Hi Stuart,

More widgety fun for me to mess around with…thanks once again for your efforts.

I’ve gotten a couple of nagging emails from Apple reminding me to “make my widget a Universal Binary”. Do you know if the widget runs native on the Intel Macs, and if not, do you have any plans to update?

Hi Jamie, to be honest, I’m not sure. Next time I get into an apple store I’ll install it and see what happens. I would have thought though, to be honest that it would work the same as on a powerPC mac.

Something to say...

Then add a comment why dont ya!
