Match Report 2

written by Stuart on November 15th, 2006

Welcome, sports fans, to another edition of the Nagoya Grampus Five newsletter.

Week four of the JMU Intramural League saw Nagoya Grampus Five facing Los Merengues in a flood-lit evening kick off. After last week’s defeat, the Nagoya boys were keen to get back to winning ways at the earliest opportunity…

The game started at a frantic pace with Kishan Patel firing NGF in to an early lead following some lovely build up play. The opening exchanges between these evenly matched sides were exhilarating to watch as they both came to attack each other and get goals. The goals flew in for both sides as they kept up a level pegging during the first half.

Forget Yorke and Cole. Forget Sheringham and Shearer. Forget Pele and Jairzinho. Kenyon and Phillips are here.

The simple fact is this; the Kenyon-Phillips partnership was magnificent. The interplay and trickery of the two front men was inspirational to watch as they worked tirelessly for the team and helped themselves to goals. As fantastic as Kenyon and Phillips were, the goal of the game was scored by Kanazawa U’s finest, Ryo Asaoka. With his first touch, he beat two players and calmly slotted the ball under the goalkeeper from a near-impossible angle. Gasps of amazement were heard from all around and even the opposition players applauded Asaoka’s goal.

In a breathless first half, goals from the dynamic duo of Kenyon and Phillips and some cool finishing from Stephen Durant gave Nagoya Grampus Five a deserved half time lead.

Half time: NGF 8 – 7 Los Merengues

With the scores so close, both teams felt that they could go on to win the game and so the second half began with both sides pushing forward in search of the goals that would settle it.Some of the Nagoya Grampus Five play during this period was breathtaking to watch. The ball was fizzed around the pitch with consummate ease, pulling the Los Merengues players out of position and creating more chances. Both sides were becoming frustrated by the excellent standard of goalkeeping on display. Shot after shot was being turned away by the two goalkeepers as the game remained on a knife edge.

A second half penalty awarded to Nagoya Grampus Five gave them the chance to turn the game in their favour. The pressure was on but Jamie Kenyon stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. This gave NGF the momentum to go on and get more goals, with Phillips, Durant and Patel all getting on the score sheet in the second half. The three points were wrapped up when Dave Abbot took the ball on the edge of the penalty area and banjoed it into the roof of the net. Beautiful.

A glorious performance from our boys and three well deserved points. Scenes of jubilation followed.

The Nagoya Grampus Five bandwagon rolls on.

Final score:
Nagoya Grampus Five 14 – 11 Los Merengues
